INLAND ISTRIA · CROATIA
Less itinerary.
More discovery.
Three days, a handful of places and enough space for the unexpected. A considered introduction to the valley.
MIRNA · ISTRIA
A river connects it all.
From the western hills to Buzet and the upper river, choose a place to discover its story and the next connection.
Orientation map. Geography simplified; not a navigation or trail map.
Begin at the edge of the old town, where the valley opens below the walls. Motovun is a place of stone lanes, changing light and long views over the Mirna. Take the climb slowly, then give the surrounding countryside as much time as the hilltop. Livade below and Oprtalj across the valley make natural next chapters.

Before you go
Arriving & moving around
A car or a pre-arranged transfer gives flexibility between dispersed villages. Do not assume a frequent bus connection between every stop. Historic centres can involve steep streets, steps and restricted vehicle access; check parking and accessibility with your host. For wine tastings, arrange a driver before the first glass.
Where to make your base
Choose one base rather than changing rooms every night. Motovun suits a hilltop stay, the Livade area puts you close to truffle country, and Buzet works for the upper river. Look for a genuinely local host and confirm parking, check-in, restaurant openings and your room’s access before booking directly.
Travel gently
These are living villages and working landscapes. Keep private entrances clear, ask before photographing people, carry your litter out and stay on signed paths. Forest access and truffle collecting are regulated: use an authorised local operator rather than entering or collecting independently. Outdoor conditions can change after rain.
A few useful answers
How long should I stay?
Two or three nights leave room for villages, food and a little countryside without turning every day into a drive. With one day, choose one small area rather than the whole valley.
When is the white-truffle season?
Autumn is the usual focus, often extending into early winter. Nature varies; confirm fresh availability and specific experiences directly rather than booking around a guarantee.
Can I visit without a car?
Yes, with a carefully chosen base and pre-arranged transfers or guided excursions. Do not rely on frequent public transport between all villages. Ask your accommodation about current local options.
Stay for
what you didn’t plan.
Choose a base, leave a little room in the day, and let the valley do the rest.
